Description
Prediction-based False Memories: Prediction alone is sufficient to induce false memories
In the ever-changing environment, our mind constantly makes predictions to prepare ourselves for upcoming events. Studies have found that the impact of prediction is not limited to transient influences on perception. On one hand, events that confirm our predictions are well remembered. On the other hand, events that violate our predictions are also well remembered. However, it is unclear whether predictions in themselves are sufficient to produce episodic memories of the predicted events. In a series of experiments, we demonstrate that prediction alone is indeed sufficient to lay down episodic memories of predicted events without the confirmation of the predictions. Furthermore, these prediction-based false memories are so robust that they are not eliminated in the face of immediate and direct rebuttal of the predictions, regardless of the magnitude of the violations. These results demonstrate a robust impact of predictions on episodic memories.
